I know you were too young to do anything about it then, and probably also too far away.

But for those who were close by and adults, if only enough of us had shown up, the authorities might have been deterred by our very numbers peacefully. The only reason bullies get away with what they do is that no one stands up to them. They feel safe, knowing that.

This is an ongoing problem that applies to all people, and that is why what happened in Nazi Germany is instructive to us today. It really isn't okay not to get involved when it is happening on our watch and in our neck of the woods. My history teacher also felt that way, but he was really the only person that talked with us about it at the time. However, I really would not have got involved. I do not even know why there was a need for a stand off with some group that wanted to live their own lifestyle, that part was always confusing to me.Jhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11147781152448695481noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8069432629974606542.post-6110687586560879472015-11-02T15:19:02.160-08:002015-11-02T15:19:02.160-08:00Now that I have new friends who were not there at ...Now that I have new friends who were not there at the time, I cannot help wondering what they would do, if put to the test. And those who were grown ups, too, at that time, are people that I am afraid to ask: What did you do in 1993 just before Mt. Carmel burned?

I get that it's not polite, but it makes me mistrust people not be able to know the answer.
Aya Katzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07830585801297506770noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8069432629974606542.post-85819169042022452172015-11-02T15:15:45.159-08:002015-11-02T15:15:45.159-08:00I agree with part of the sentiments you express, I...I agree with part of the sentiments you express, It really is too late to do anything about the Holocaust, and the children of collaborators are not at fault.

At the same time, in 1993, when I was a grown up at Rice, I asked my friends to help me stop a massacre, and except for my brother, nobody came. I will never forget that, and I do not think it was okay that everybody went about their business and let those families die. A strong resistance at the right time -- even jeopardizing a job or college education to save those lives, would have made all the difference in the world. And who will stand up for me now if they come for my family?Aya Katzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07830585801297506770noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8069432629974606542.post-74490541654114037032015-11-02T14:44:27.573-08:002015-11-02T14:44:27.573-08:00Many people now a days want to focus on positive a...Many people now a days want to focus on positive and uplifting things when they go online. There is enough negative things in the world, and some people just do not want to always think about politics. There are bad things countries do in our name, but not everyone wants to always obsess about these things. I do not blame people because honestly I have reached an end of wanting to always focus on this kind of stuff. It can be discouraging, and there are more positive things to do in life. Also, what if making what you can out of life is the best for yourself so you can be healthy and make a living? Focusing on the negative can depress people, and who is going to pay their bills if they feel bad. I am not sure how I feel about documentaries where people are confronted with their past and forced to share it with the world. I have not watched that documentary, but it sounds like the children were being polite and going along with what the documentary makers wanted to say. Perhaps they were more private people and just waned to live their own lives. I know my family thinks I post too much on social media, and some will not even have Facebook accounts. Maybe the Tuchlers and Midlesteins did not feel comfortable with being confronted with details about their family life they felt were embarrassing. I had one ancestor who did something I think is really horrible, in my opinion, and I know some family members who said they would never want me to talk about this.Jhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11147781152448695481noreply@blogger.com
